Job summary

West Meads Surgery is a well-established, supportive GMS practice on the Sussex coast, and we are looking for a salaried GP to join us for 4–6 sessions a week.

You will have 15-minute appointments, a protected 30-minute educational break every morning, a GP assistant and a wide multidisciplinary team, including first contact practitioners in mental health and MSK. The role includes a duty doctor day, and we would like you to take the lead in an area that genuinely interests you, whether that is a clinical speciality, a long-term condition or an aspect of how the practice runs.

Main duties of the job

We aim for a good work–life balance and a strong team spirit, and we encourage our clinicians to develop special interests as part of their workload. We promote lifestyle medicine to help patients achieve better metabolic health, including collaborative low-carb groups for patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes. We are looking for someone forward-thinking who is comfortable using modern technology.

Your core responsibilities will include:

• 15-minute face-to-face and remote consultations for patients of all ages, covering acute, chronic and mental health presentations, with no restrictions on prescribing
• A duty doctor day, managing on-the-day urgent demand and supporting the wider clinical team
• Lead responsibility for an area of your choosing, for example a long-term condition, prescribing, safeguarding, training or metabolic health
• A share of home visits & care homes
• Ordering and interpreting investigations, referring to secondary care and arranging emergency admissions where needed
• A share of clinical admin, including actioning letters and filing pathology results
• Working with the wider multidisciplinary team, including pharmacists, health visitors, midwives and mental health services

Occasionally you may be asked to carry out other tasks, depending on workload and staffing levels.

About us

Our thriving, semi-rural GMS practice cares for approximately 7,800 patients. Our clinical team comprises two GP partners and a paramedic partner, five salaried GPs, a further paramedic, two ANPs and a highly skilled nursing team, all supported by an excellent non-clinical team. We also have first contact practitioners in mental health and MSK, a

pharmacist and pharmacy technician, a health and wellbeing coach and a GP assistant. This breadth of support protects your time, so you can give each patient the time they need.

We use SystmOne and are a teaching practice for GP registrars and medical students. Our most recent CQC inspection, in 2022, rated the practice Good.

We take our team’s wellbeing seriously. Stretch, walk and educational breaks are built into our clinical rotas, including a protected 30-minute educational break every morning.

The surgery is close to the sea and a few minutes’ drive from the South Downs National Park, with plenty of outdoor activities on the doorstep and Brighton and Portsmouth within easy reach.
